Purpose:
To Introduce a novel method for management of pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD).
Methods:
In this prospective study, five allograft-based intracorneal ring segment (AGB-ICRS) was implanted in four patients with PMD. A femtosecond laser-assisted 3.5mm diameters canals at 5.5 to 9 mm corneal zone was created. A segment of AGB-ICRS was implanted in the canal with same curvature with 3 mm diameter. The arch lengths were determined by inferior steep areas.
Results:
Uncorrected visual acuity and best corrected visual acuity improved after surgery in all eyes. On topography maps, the steep areas were displaced to superior and the amount of irregular astigmatism was reduced. There were no complications or side effects intera- or post-operation during six months follow up period.
Conclusion:
AGB-ICRS is a safe, effective and cheap new method for management of PMD. Longer follow up and larger sample size is needed to confirm our current findings.
