Purpose:
To present clinical features and microbial profile in endogenous endophthalmitis
Methods:
For 12 years, sixty-seven cases of endogenous endophthalmitis were included. The cases were studied especially regarding microorganisms, background cause, and visual outcome.
Results:
There was no significant difference between male and female gender in frequency, the mean age was 51.16.4% cases were bilateral. Yeasts were the most encountered microorganisms. Candida was found in 31.3 % of cases. Staphylococcus aureus was the second isolated microorganism including 19.4% of cases. The most common leading cause was pyelonephritis (38.1%). In 9.1%, there was not any systemic disease or situation as a culprit for endogenous endophthalmitis. In 64.6% of eyes, the patient underwent pars plana vitrectomy, most frequently for candida keratitis.17.9% of cases were no light perception(NLP) at final follow up.
Conclusion:
The most frequent microorganism in this study was candida. The study showed poor visual outcome in endogenous endophthalmitis.
