Purpose:

To evaluate the results of transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (T-PRK) procedure in the treatment of hyperopia.

Methods:

In this retrospective case series study, 22 eyes of 11 patients were enrolled, who underwent Transepithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy (T-PRK) with mitomycin-C (MMC) for treatment of hyperopia using Amaris 500-Hz excimer laser (SCHWIND eye-tech solutions GmbH, Germany). After treatment, the efficacy, safety and complications of treatment were assessed at 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Main outcome measures were visual acuity, manifest refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) and complications.

Results:

The preoperative mean uncorrected distance visual acuity 0.63 ± 0.05 logMAR improved to 0.19 ± 0.04 (P < .0001), 6 months postoperatively. 64.2% of the treated eyes gained an uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/25 or better. The percentage of postoperative uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) of 20/20 or better was 72.7% (16 eyes). Postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of unchanged or gained ≥1 lines and postoperative BCVA of lost ≥2 lines were 86.3% (19 eyes) and 4.5% (1 eye), respectively. At postoperative 6 months, the mean MRSE was +0.45 D (-0.25 to 0.65 D) and the percentage of MRSE of within ±0.50 D was 95.4% (21 eyes). Four eyes (18.1%) lost one line of preoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA). On final visit, two eyes tolerated 3+ degree of corneal haze. No other noticeable complication occurred.

Conclusion:

The study showed that T-PRK with MMC is an effective and safe treatment for hyperopia correction. The incidence of corneal haze was reasonable.
