Purpose:
Reactive oxygen species such as superoxide, hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals are inducers of oxidative stress. Curcumin, as a strong scavenger, has important role in preventing ocular disease such as glaucoma.
Methods:
After preparation of chitosan nanoparticles, curcumin was added into chitosan solution for the formulation of drug loaded NPs. IOP reducing efficiency of curcumin loaded nanoparticles was assessed by using a tonometer after administration of CUR loaded nanoparticles on the corneal surface of left eyes' of experimental animals.
Results:
Our results showed that use of CUR loaded nanoparticles decreased the intra ocular pressure (IOP) effects significantly in comparison with CUR and chitosan nanoparticles alone (p<0.05).
Conclusion:
Taken together, use of Curcumin-loaded chitosan (CS) nanoparticles enhanced reduction of IOP which can be beneficial in treatment of glucoma.
